The North Carolina Aquarium and Fort Fisher History Museum are just down the road at the south end of the island. From the aquarium, you can access tidal marsh trails and enjoy the native wildlife and flora. In the same area, you will find the Fort Fisher to Southport ferry. Take a day trip to historic Southport for antiquing and lunch on the river. If you enjoy surf fishing, you can access the south end of Fort Fisher from the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area by four-wheel drive or on foot. There are also four-wheel drive accesses on the north end of Carolina Beach at Freeman Park.
